Meet Kelsey Kates, she's on a mission to Humanize High-Performance

Somewhere along the line, the corporate world bought into a massive MYTH: To be taken seriously, work has to be entirely serious.

So we optimized for algorithms, productivity hacks, and back-to-back meetings — accidentally stripping away the very things that help humans and teams thrive: trust, curiosity, psychological safety, creativity, adaptability, and genuine connection.

We made work machine-friendly. And NOT nearly human-friendly enough.

I’m here to help change that.

Because as work becomes more automated, human skills become more valuable — not less.

Play researcher Dr. Stuart Brown famously said: “The opposite of play isn’t work or seriousness — it’s sadness.”

That idea sits at the heart of my work. Playfulness isn’t about making work childish. It’s about helping humans feel safe enough to connect, contribute, experiment, and thrive together.

Research shows that playfulness regulates stress, strengthens trust, increases openness, and creates the psychological safety needed for real innovation and collaboration. It doesn’t make work less serious — it helps humans do serious work better together.

Playfulness: I’m not talking about icebreakers. I’m talking about environments where people feel safe enough to challenge ideas, take healthy risks, stay adaptable, and bring more of their humanity into the work that matters most.

It’s reading the room and knowing when a moment of humor can defuse tension or rebuild trust. It’s the leader who can hold difficulty and warmth at the same time. The team that can laugh at a failed experiment instead of quietly burying it. The meeting that somehow leaves people feeling more energized than when they walked in.

It’s not a personality type. It’s a skill — and it’s one of the most underrated tools in any organization’s toolkit.

And in a world increasingly shaped by AI, the organizations that win won’t be the ones with the best algorithms. They’ll be the ones with the most human teams.

That’s what I help build. Today I partner with organizations through keynote speaking, facilitation, workshops, and leadership experiences grounded in neuroscience, playfulness, and real human connection.
