I’ve spent the last 20ish years working – at start-ups, non-profits, small businesses, and big multi-national corporations. I can say that I’ve nailed ‘adulting’ in the sense of having increasing responsibilities, getting sh*t done, showing value, etc. All experiences I have grown from and where I’ve done some really cool things. And, I’ve definitely had some (ok a lot) of fun along the way.

That said, the playful part isn’t something I see in adults and at work, nearly enough. Think… adopting a mindset of lightheartedness. Approaching things less seriously and with the intention of creating more fun and joy. I know this is something not everyone agrees with, I can just hear a former boss in my head saying ‘Kelsey, it’s called work for a reason’, but hear me out…

1. The opposite of ‘play’ isn’t work or seriousness; it is ‘sadness’ – Dr. Stuart Brown.
2. Playfulness is linked to our evolution of neurosystem mechanics and allows us to move from fight or flight to a safe and socially engaged state.
3.  The ability to engage in playfulness, particularly in adult work environments, reflects an ability to adapt and engage.
4. “It takes 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain unless it is done in play” – Dr. Karyn Purvis.
5. While playfulness can be seen as a distraction from work, play can be productive – increasing creativity, and collaboration – a willingness to take more risks.

I’m on a mission to make being a working adult more playful and productive.
